Workforce Development
Request
Under a United States Agency for International Development contract, Kiron assisted in the management and implementation of a broad scale workforce development, vocational/technical training, and employment services in project in Iraq. This initiative was in response to the challenges in Iraq related to wide unemployment and an under skilled workforce as well as the needs of an emerging private sector. Additional activities included capacity building at the Ministry Labor and Social Affairs. The two-year program improved the skills of Iraq's workforce by establishing Vocational and Technical Training Centers and Employment Service Centers.
Results
Over 25,000 Iraqis were trained. Each month 500 registered job seekers (ensuring that 30% were women) were assisted in finding employment in the private sector. Over the length of the project 12,500 Iraqis participated in on-the-job training. The Employment Service Centers secured employment for at least 75% of the Vocational Training Centers graduates. The centers were used by unemployed youth (17 and older), demobilized soldiers and militia, displaced persons, women, agricultural workers and others without marketable skills.
